AstroPlanner V2 has been released. Finally.
The release of AstroPlanner V2.0 is now pretty much in the bag. Release date will be Wednesday, 14 September 2011.
After a lot of fruitless screwing around with trying to get code running on remote servers using obsolete versions of the compiler, I have finally implemented a solution to the AstroPlanner vs. Lion problem (i.e. Mac OS X Lion only runs Intel-native apps. AstroPlanner V1 is PowerPC-only and hence doesn’t run. AstroPlanner V1 uses a proprietary database format that isn’t available to Intel Mac users, etc.).
Once again, Windows users and non-curious Mac users need not read further.
Getting AstroPlanner V2.0 to the point that it can be released still seems like an insurmountable task. What is still to be done?
Windows-only users need not read further…
Crunch time is approaching more rapidly than I had predicted. i.e. AstroPlanner V2.0 is a week or three away from release, and so is Mac OS X 10.7 (a.k.a “Lion”). For Mac users of AstroPlanner, you could have a problem or two if Lion is released before AstroPlanner V2. What are these problems?
Well it’s been quite a while since I posted here. Many thousands of man hours have gone by. AstroPlanner in now at V2.0b58. So what is the current status of the application? Continue Reading »
The image downloading system in V2 was, until recently, largely unchanged from the system used in V1. However, it has always been delicate and prone to problems and is a cause of many support questions. After some thought I decided it was time to revise the whole thing and make it both more robust, more efficient, and less obtrusive.
The beta has started, but the app is still not quite in a condition to release publicly (IMHO), so those of you waiting should continue to be patient for just a little longer.

Woo hoo! The alpha (development) stage of V2 is over. The beta (testing) phase begins. Once I have eliminated some of the nastier bugs, I will make the beta publicly available. This will probably happen in a week or two.
The Plan Creation Wizard feature in V1.x wasn’t particularly “wizardy”. It had a confusing single pane dialog, forced you to choose constellations, and was abysmally slow. It also wasn’t overly clever at picking objects for your plan, and would often present you with an empty plan with no objects found (apparently).
This feature has been totally revised for V2.
